TECHnically Dating

Serious question, is Valentine's Day a real holiday or just a corporate plot to make more money? Either way, dating in the digital age isn't what it used to be and 2018 doesn't show any signs of slowing down. The dating world has evolved in the past 5 to 6 years since apps like Tinder revolutionized the game. And while we can tell you to hate the player and not the game, there is no denying the fact that dating in this day and age might mean you have to get in the game.

For the technology impaired, we’ve got you. We polled our employees and get the good, bad and ugly about online dating.

Favorite dating app
Hinge – feels less shady since it connects you to friends of friends

Best/worst first date experience
I went on a Bumble date with a guy who clearly wasn't a match. He insisted on walking me home despite me explicitly saying "I don't want you to walk me home". I ended up walking to a friend's place instead and we all watched Inception together until he finally got the hint and left.

Advice for people getting into online dating for the first time
Don’t do it.

Grace Street for coffee or ice cream. Low-key enough that you can make a quick escape if it's a bad date. They have real food too so easy to extend the date to a dinner thing if it goes well

Go online shopping because there are always promo codes for Valentine's Day.

Worst: Had stage 5 stalker that wouldn't stop calling, texting and trying to facetime. Best: Met a number of great people that I never would have without using a dating app

Favorite dating app
Tinder  – after getting out of a long term relationship I had to "learn" how to use dating apps. Tinder was the only one I tried.

Best/worst first date experience
I'm in now in a relationship with the first person I matched and went on a date with. How's that for success story (Tinder get at me if you need a spokesperson)

Advice for people getting into online dating for the first time
Apparently selecting the right set of profile photos is a science. Choose wisely.

Best first date spot in the city
Always stick to drinks or coffee. Getting dinner on a first date is a terrible idea bc you're committed to having an entire meal with someone you might not like or who catfished you.

Favorite dating app
Myspace. I’ve been in a relationship for 12 years now, so before apps were really a thing! However, I definitely proved out that using technology to connect love interests was a real need. Myspace definitely increased my magic number, and also caused me to meet my now fiancee. Thanks TOM!

Best/worst first date experience
Best: meeting my other half. Even though we had used Myspace to arrange meeting at a local rock club whilst she was out with her girls and me my boys, I had to down 5 pints to pluck up the courage to go and speak to her. When I finally swaggered over her friends all just vanished and left us to it, they knew the drill. Worst: I met a girl over a weekend where I spent every penny I had, but I was so desperate to see her again I invited her to my hometown to a local music night that week. I didn't even have enough to buy her a drink. WHAT WAS I THINKING?!

Advice for people getting into online dating for the first time
OH, I could write an essay on this. In fact, I will. I keep hearing stories about people feeling 'empty' after using apps like Tinder etc. There's all this technology, and yet I have so many single friends who are desperate for mr/mrs right. In big cities like NY with so many faces and so much choice it is easy for apps to make swiping on to the next person feel really easy. This seems to be playing out in real life resulting in people becoming more and more fickle. I think we are predisposed to find what we think is the most attractive person in any given context so people are constantly chasing the new shiny person. As a result we don't invest in getting to know and grow, with others. The smallest bit of friction on a date and people will throw someone out and swipe right on someone new. So I would warn people to try and be aware of their cognitive limitations and basic instincts because they don't always know what a good match looks like. Don't get me wrong, I think the ability to quickly filter through the world's people for someone that aligns with our values is a hell of a lot better mechanism for meeting than say, being in a bar with a bunch of randoms, but it seems our lizard brains haven't yet evolved to deal with this new technology.

Target, obviously. Nah if you're meeting someone new, do what you're both interested in. I love activity dates over drinking or anything... Bouldering could be a fun way to spend a date, going for a hike upstate, or taking a pottery workshop together (we've all seen Ghost?).

Best activity for singles on Valentine’s Day
Target, or pottery workshop. Whatever you want, do something that you've always wanted to do.

Favorite dating app
Tinder, I think its the most straightforward, least expectations

Best/worst first date experience
The first date I went on through an app I kind of got catfished. Person looked nothing like their photo and her personality seemed nothing like when we were chatting. She invited me to a really expensive place and didn't offer to split the bill. Best may have been matching with a girl I used to date and rekindling the flame for a hot second.

Advice for people getting into online dating for the first time
It's pretty visual in my experience, gotta have some good pics.

Best first date spot in the city
I like to switch it up and explore. I think it's good to go somewhere you can talk for a drink, and then know of somewhere nearby that's a little more lively if you're both having fun.
